Business idea found in office cafeteria – After MTech from IIT Delhi, Deepinder Goyal took a job as a consultant in consulting firm Bain & Co. While on the job, he noticed that during office lunches, his colleagues used to wait for their turn in long queues to see the menu in the cafeteria, thereby wasting a lot of their time. Being an engineer, Deependra, who advocated the use of technology to make life easier, scanned the menus and made them available online to save the time of his colleagues. Soon this post started getting many hits. This is where Deependra got the business idea and he decided to create a website and mobile app where people can easily get information related to the best restaurants in their city.

Own business with job – Deepinder Goyal’s idea was appreciated by his colleague Pankaj Chadha and decided to support him. In 2008, while on the job, Deependra started the online food portal Foodibay.com with Pankaj. The purpose of this portal was to make it easy for users to search for restaurants based on location, price and popularity. Within a year, Fudibe started getting good feedback from users, so Deependra decided to leave his job and focus on business. In late 2010, Deependra decided to change the name of Fudibe. That was the reason. First, they wanted a name that was similar to the food item, short and easy to remember. Second, they didn’t want any name confusion with eBay. Zomato met this test and Fudibe turned into Zomato.
If you get challenges then happiness too – ‘As an entrepreneur you have to take tough decisions. The first tough decision was to leave a secure job,’ says Dipendra. Raising the first round of funds and finding suitable personnel was not easy. We also started the events section, which had to be closed shortly after. When we launched the first international operation in September 2012, we were present in 12 cities of India never imagined that in such a short time we will spread to 155 cities in 19 countries.
